EPL referee Mark Clattenburg gifts Porto a Champions League win

Spanish La Liga side Malaga now find themselves down 1-0 in their Champions League elimination round series after English referee Mark Clattenburg of England allowed a Porto goal which was clearly offside.

Porto fullback Alex Sandro played a perfect pass through to teammate Joao Moutinho in the 56th minute but Moutinho was clearly in an offside position when the ball was played.

After the match Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini was clearly unhappy that Moutinho’s e controversial goal was allowed to stand in the tightly contested first leg match.

“It looked offside to me although I have not yet seen a replay,” Pellegrini said during interviews after the match.

The Malaga players all put their arms up immediately after the ball was played to Moutinho who calmly left-footed the ball past goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Porto now take an all-important 1-0 lead into the second leg on March 13th at La Rosaleda in Malaga, Spain.

The question remains how could Clattenburg and his two linesman, Simon Beck and Stuart Beck as well as behind-the-goal judges Lee Probert and Mike Dean all have missed such a blatant offside?

The call has changed the entire complexion of the series. Hopefully officials at UEFA are aware of the error and will consider this when making future referee and match official appointments.
