Referee Anthony Taylor’s montage of Liverpool misery goes viral on social media

While a picture may be worth a thousand words, a popular Twitter quartet of referee Anthony Taylor’s glaring errors has Liverpool fans seeing Red following Saturday’s crushing 2-1 Barclays Premier League loss to Chelsea.

As the action in the BPL heats up, the latest sub-par performance by a match official had fans in the Cop at Anfield hopping mad.

The major talking point of this match – and most social media rants - was frame four of the photo and how Taylor clearly missed Blues’ Gary Cahill handle the ball in front of goal, robbing Steven Gerrard of an injury time equalizer.

The latest snafu is further proof that the integrity and quality of refereeing continues to erode.

Gerrard immediately charged at Taylor pleading for him to see the light.

Under-pressure Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers carefully guarded his words about the referee, but his frustration was still clearly evident.

“Our players gave everything and we should have got it [the penalty]. You have to see that,” said Rodgers. “He [Taylor] had a clear look at it – maybe he needed help from his lineman…It was a clear penalty and we should have got it.”

The 36-year-old referee from Manchester made several other unforgivable mistakes, photos of which went viral on social media.

Taylor appeared all to willing to completely ignore Reds’ defender Martin Skrtel’s match-long wrestling match with Chelsea striker Diego Costa (frame #1).  How Taylor failed to caution Costa for his first-half body slam from behind on Skrtel in the opening minutes is a mystery. Why he let the disgusting display continue for 90 minutes is unexplainable.

Was Taylor and his team of officials completely unaware that the two combatants had also nearly come to blows in Spain’s Euro qualifying clash with Croatia? Even without being aware of this factor, the pair should have both been sent off for their latest show of bad sportsmanship.

Hopefully the BPL disciplinary committee will review video and Frame #2 of the Twitter photo, showing Chelsea midfielder Ramires who delivers a punch to the face of Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling in the 43rd minute.

Taylor somehow ruled that Sterling had obstructed his opponent on the play and instead gave Sterling him a yellow card to go along with his fat lip.

Finally the third frame in the montage calls into question Chelsea’s 66th-minute winner scored by Costa.

The image seems to show that Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilcueta had let the ball run out of play before he hooked it in to Costa for the winner.

Strange, but not surprising (given the course of events) that neither Taylor or his linesman decided not to do the right thing and call the play back for a Liverpool throwin.

On the flip side, there is a certain amount of debate as to whether the ball actually fully crossed the line and some television replays appear to vindicate Taylor.

It will be hard for Liverpool fans to forgive Taylor for his other more obvious errors.
