Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz sounded off against Serbian referee Milorad Mazic after his team’s 1-0 loss to Argentina in preliminary round action at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday.
Iran was irate as Mazic who waived play on in the 64th minute after Argentina’s Pablo Zabaleta clearly tripped up Iran’s Ashkan Dejagah in the penalty area.
The flash point sparked an emotional outburst by Dejagah who made contact with Mazic while protesting his decision and continued his verbal tirade for several minutes after the game-changing decision.
Both coach and player could soon find themselves on the hot seat with FIFA officials and could fined or suspended for their actions in this tense and highly entertaining matchup.
“I saw the penalty,” Queiroz told reporters after the match. “It was a penalty, clear. The referee played a role in this game…There is no way… I just saw it in the video. [Mazic] is five meters behind the situation. There is no way that that decision can escape from him.”
You can see and listen to the coach and his reaction to the decision on this YouTube post:
Argentina’s Lionel Messi struck for the only goal of the match in injury time while Queiroz was still fuming over the decision on the sidelines and continued to vent his frustration at Mazic.
“I still feel I’m young, and I want to play more football games in my life, so we need to be careful with the words that we use,” Queiroz also said after the match told reporters in his postgame press conference. “Messi was great, scored the winning goal, did his duty. The referee, I’m sorry… was not at the same level.”
This was Mazic’s second game at the FIFA World Cup. He also oversaw Monday’s game and handed out the second red card of the tournament to Pepe of Portugal for a headbutt on Germany’s Thomas Muller.
